The end of January is here and now is the heart of winter in Crested Butte. Crested Butte Mountain Resort continues to announce terrain openings and the famed Alley Loop nordic marathon is just around the corner.
Crested Butte Mountain Resort Terrain Openings
Crested Butte Mountain Resort has opened a lot of new terrain in the last couple of weeks. The Peel, Headwall, and Teocalli Bowl opened on MLK weekend. Flatiron followed about a week after. Banana opened just yesterday, and is skiing phenomenally.
But, most importantly, the ski patrol is working toward getting the North Face terrain open soon. On Monday, they made this announcement on their Facebook page.
Alley Loop on Feb 6th-7th
February in Crested Butte is kicked off by the Alley Loop. The 29th annual Alley Loop Nordic Marathon is been held on Feb 7th and is kickstarted by a fat bike race and pub crawl the day before.
Who doesn’t love it when Elk Avenue is covered in snow? That’s what makes the Alley Loop so special. Every year, truckloads of snow are transported from nearby Crested Butte stockpiles to cover the streets for nordic skiers to race upon.
The Alley Loop is not only a qualifying race for the American Berkebeiner and part of the American Ski Marathon Series, it is also another reason to get all costumed-out in true Crested Butte style. We locals here in Crested Butte are always looking for a reason to dig into our costume box! If you want to do more than just watch, consider entering yourself! The Alley Loop has distances that cater to nearly everyone, with choices of 1.5 km, 3 km, 5 km, 10 km, 21 km, or 42 km in length!
