Welcome to the Winter of 2011 – 2012!
The snow is here and our season is off to a roaring start! The trails are packed at Lily Lake and about to be groomed by the Snowcat. First up on the calendar of events is the Community Potluck Dinner on Thursday, November 10, followed by the ski swap on Saturday, November 12. Join us over Thanksgiving for the annual Training Camp–3 days of clinics for beginners to experts in both classic and skate skiing. We’ll round out Thanksgiving weekend with a benefit celebration for the CBNC at the newly named Kick’n'Glide Winter Gala, featuring food, music, and both a silent and live auction.

Lily Lake Update
As of November 6, the base at Lily Lake was 24 inches. The trails were packed repeatedly this weekend, and we’re headed out with the Snowcat tonight. Volunteers spent the fall clearing new and old Lily Lake trails and we are pleased to announce a new entrance off of Kebler Pass road that’s a more gradual climb to the top. Parking’s available at the Irwin Y, from which you can jump on the easy trails in the valley, and then link up to the new entrance just East of the Y, near where the Wagon Trail joins Kebler Pass Road. Maps of the Lily Lake trails will be available at the CBNC front desk at the Potluck on Thursday. Once again the road will be plowed to the Y through Thanksgiving weekend, making for top-notch skiing during our 11th Annual Thanksgiving Camp.

Ski Swap – November 12
*Rental Skis for SALE*
It’s time to dig out those cross-country skis from the garage, pull your snowshoes down from the attic, and get yourself organized for winter. Come sell your old gear and acquire new-to-you equipment at our annual Nordic Ski Swap on November 12. Drop off is on Friday, from 9 am to 7 pm, Swap is Saturday 9 am – 2 pm, and pick up is Saturday 2 – 5 pm. Entry is $5 on Saturday, and gets you access to not just your neighbor’s skis, but also a bunch of our Nordic rental fleet. Nordic, Telemark, and Alpine Touring equipment are welcome!

Thanksgiving Camp – November 24-26
Now in it’s 11th year, our Thanksgiving Camp just keeps getting better. Trail additions and maintenance have made for improved skiing, and our clinic offerings taught by expert instructors continue to grow. This year, we’re pleased to present three days of clinics taught by Rebecca Dussault, Ingrid Butts, Ross Matlock, Murray Banks, and Toni Westerholm. Work up an appetite with us on Thursday morning at the Classic Skills & Drills refresher day from 9 to 11 am. This new clinic is the perfect way to warm-up for the weekend, learn some new tricks, and meet other Camp participants and instructors so you’re set up for success in the later clinics. Friday and Saturday you’ll get the chance to start your day off right with Pilates taught by Kenny Marks at the Nordic Center at 7 am. The on-snow clinics include beginning, intermediate, and advanced classic and skate clinics. Other featured clinics include the Masters Race and Women’s-specific clinics in both Classic and Skate.

Everyone loves a party, and so we’ve decided to throw ourselves a good one. Every Thanksgiving weekend we host our traditional silent auction dinner, and while the silent auction remains, the name and the venue have changed. Join us this year at the Kick’n'Glide Winter Gala, hosted at Montanya Distillers on Saturday, November 26 at 6 pm.

Breathtaking altitudes, treacherous climbs and 128 of the worlds best riders. It’s the most challenging race held on American soil.

Mt. Crested Butte will host the Stage 1 finish for this exciting event…

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge is the most demanding bike race ever held on American soil, with racers experiencing breathless altitudes, day after day. The race is on the level of the Tour de France, bringing the high speeds, danger and adrenaline of professional biking to elevations over 2 miles high in some of the most picturesque terrain in the world—the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

The race takes place just 2 blocks from the Elk Mountain Lodge…

The Details:
Stage 1: Salida to Crested Butte/Mt. Crested Butte (August 23, 2011)
With a start in Salida, Colorado, racers will take a circuit through downtown Salida before heading on their way on this 102 mile course to Mt. Crested Butte. On the first day of road racing, the cyclists will get to compete for their first King of the Mountain points. Positioned on Monarch Pass, the King of the Mountain honor goes to the first few cyclists to reach the top of their first mountain climb, one that reaches 11,315 feet in elevation. This first climb forces the riders to gain 3250 feet in elevation over 13 miles, and will be their first taste of the oxygen-deprived Colorado high altitude. After this challenge, the cyclists will have two sprint lines to compete for – one in Gunnison and one near the finish line in Crested Butte. At the sprint line, riders ride as fast as they can to reach the sprint line to gain points. But with a sprint line so close to the finish, competitors will have to decide which line to expend their energy racing for – because both will be impossible in a finish like this one. In this unique finish equation, the competitors in Stage 1 will close out the day on an uphill climb, from the lower area of Crested Butte to the finish line on Mt. Crested Butte – the USA Pro Cycling Challenge’s only mountain top finish.

Want to learn more about this one-of-a-kind event? Visit the USA Pro Cycling Website for the whole scoop.

New for Summer 2011 is the Lupine Trail, located just beyond downtown Crested Butte. It doesn’t take long to figure out why this trail is named the Lupine Trail… there is lupine everywhere (see photos below, taken on July 6, 2011).

The trail is great for either hiking or biking, but hikers may want to arrange for a shuttle as cars are not allowed to park at the trailhead.

Access the trail from the Saddle Ridge subdivision culdesac off Gothic Road. No parking is permitted at the trailhead, so please respect this rule. Riding from town, take the Rec Path up towards Mt. Crested Butte. Cut over to the road when you reach Washington Gulch (there will be a short, steep shortcut on the left). Head back south on Gothic Road for just a short distance and look for the entrance to Saddle Ridge neighborhood on the right. Follow the road until it ends and you will see the start of the Lupine Trail. You could also ride singletrack up via the Upper Loop and then catch Gothic Road to Saddle Ridge.

There is a short ascent on singletrack, and then the rest is downhill. The trail ends on Smith Hill Road. Turn left on Slate River Road and then right on Gothic to get back to town. Or turn right on Slate River Road and connect to the Lower Loop trails.

Check out the new Lupine Trail next time you are in town. You won’t be disappointed!
