“Butte 11: Matthew Shepard Foundation Gay Ski Week” will take place in Crested Butte from Mar 19 - 26, 2011. The Mathew Shepard Foundation was created in memory of the 21-year-old who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998.

The Elk Mountain Lodge will be participating in Gay Ski Week by donating 5% of the lodging fee of guests who attend Gay Ski Week and stay with us.

Wineries: Steve Rhodes and A. Eames’ Puesta Del Sol vineyards from the West Elks AVA, North Fork Valley, COLORADO.

DETAILS:
• Hosted by Timberline Restaurant, local winemaker Alfred Eames owner of Puesta del Sol Vineyards in Paonia and Eliane Wissoq of “The E-Vine”.
• An educational tasting of 4 red wines from two wineries from Paonia and Hotchkiss, North Fork Valley (Crested Butte’s closest Wine Country) which was designated as the West Elks AVA for its terroir at an elevation of over 6000 ft. This tasting will be particularly interesting as it will feature two of the best Colorado wineries only 10 miles from each other but whose wines are of very different styles. Steve Rhodes was one of the early (post prohibition) pionners that brought the North Fork wine country back to life in the mid 90’s and a mentor to A.Eames who followed in his foosteps a few years later. Their wines have graced notable restaurant wine lists such as The Littel Nell of Aspen. Master Sommelier / Author Andrea Immer (Windows on the World restaurant in New York City) fell in love with S. Rhodes’ 1999 Cabernet Franc at the Little Nell hotel in Aspen and picked Rhodes’ 2002 Merlot as Colorado’s top wine in a 2004 TV show called “50 Wines for 50 States.”
• Finger food will be prepared by Timberline Restaurant to compliment the wines.
• 2 bottles of Colorado wine tasted at the event is included in the ticket price ($40value) !! At $55, this package is a No Brainer!

The 9th Annual Thanksgiving Training Camp will take place in Crested Butte, CO November 27 - 29 2009.

The camp offers training clinics for Classic Nordic Skiing and Skate Skiing for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels on Friday and Saturday. Develop your skills with training offered by Olympic Coaches and Athletes.

The Nordic Fundraisers takes place Saturday night with a Silent Auction and Gourmet Dinner.

Other activities include a Sunday Tour and Waxing Clinics.

Best Mountain Biking Destination

Bryan and Mike have been thinking about summer a lot after Bike magazine recently awarded Crested Butte the Best Mountain Biking Destination. Not only does Crested Butte pick up the award for Best Mountain Biking Destination, but also received best climb, best tight and twisting trail, and honorable mention trail of the year in the March 2009 issue of Bike magazine.

The Elk Mountain Lodge has a big bike storage room with a bike stand. We have all the maps and books you need, and love sending people out on the best trails.
